I painted Ella for a groupshow I was in, at Jackson Junge Gallery in Chicago 2022. There wasn't a theme besides the size, so I was free to paint whatever I wanted. So I decided to play with light. I have always loved fireflies, from whatever I'd seen on tv. But we don't have them in The Netherlands, Chicago was the first place I saw one in real life. So it seemed fitting to have that in the painting. Combined with the Delft blue in her hair I felt it was the perfect symbolism of a Dutchie in America.
